イングランドのクリスマスキャロル。16世紀には、既に歌われていたという。
歌詞に用いられる"tidings"の語が何とも面白い。もともと「"tide"=潮」は「"time"=時」と同義の単語であり、これが"tidings"の形になることで「便り」という意味になる。船出の時間と潮の満引きの関係、船の到着がもたらす便り。なんだかロマンティックな単語だ。
