イングランドの童謡。先日紹介した『羊を探して(Searching for Lambs)』よりも有名だ。
Tom, he was a piper’s son.
笛吹の息子トムは
He learnt to play when he was young,
小さな頃に笛を習った
And all the tune that he could play,
唯一演奏できるのは
was “Over the hills and far away”.
「丘を越えて遠くへ」だ
Over the hills and a great way off,
丘を越えて遠くへと、
The wind shall blow my top-knot off.
風は私の帽子を飛ばす
Now Tom with his pipe made such a noise,
トムは笛で音立てて、
That he pleased both the girls and boys,
少年少女を喜ばせる
And they all stopped to hear him play,
子供たちはみな立ち止まり、
“Over the hills and far away”
彼の演奏を聴きました
Over the hills and a great way off,
丘を越えて遠くへと、
The wind shall blow my top-knot off.
