シェイクスピア「ソネット20番(Sonnet 20)」

シェイクスピアのソネットには、Fair Youth即ち美男子に贈られた詩が多くあるが、殊にこの20番は露骨だ。

A woman’s face with nature’s own hand painted
君が持つのは女神の描いた女の顔

Hast thou, the master-mistress of my passion;
男であり、女でもある私の主人

A woman’s gentle heart, but not acquainted
女の優しき心を持つが

With shifting change as is false women’s fashion;
彼女らと移り気は共有しない
An eye more bright than theirs, less false in rolling,
女のそれに優る一筋の眼差しは

Gilding the object whereupon it gazeth;
映るもの全てに耀きを与える

A man in hue, all hues in his controlling,
君の容色を以てすればすべては思いのまま

Which steals men’s eyes and women’s souls amazeth.
男の眼を奪い女の魂を揺さぶる

And for a woman wert thou first created,
君ははじめ女として創られたが

Till nature as she wrought thee fell a-doting,
女神は君に心奪われたのか

And by addition me of thee defeated
君を私から奪い去った

By adding one thing to my purpose nothing.
私に不要なある物を君に加えることで

But since she pricked thee out for women's pleasure,
君は女の喜びのため生まれたのだから

Mine be thy love and thy love’s use their treasure.
その体は女にくれてやろう、心が私のものである限り

　

7行目の"hue"をどう解釈するか。基本的には"appearance"、"colour"のニュアンスで、容色とでも訳すのが良いのだろう。この"hue"に関しては議論が絶えない。例えばオスカーワイルドは女形俳優Willie Hughesの事だと指摘した。
